Step 1.

Organise the class into small groups of 4 or 5 and explain the Google Images Relay activity. The teacher should guide the students through the following ICT activity together.

Google Images Relay

Where students' access to personal device usage has been integrated with the school’s wireless internet connection. Students can use their own devices (by personal devices we mean notebooks, tablets or smartphones). Alternatively, the teacher could use their personal device to create a Wifi hotspot to allow students temporary internet access. Another option could be to book into the computer lab or use the school’s mobile laptop or device cart. Ask students to search Google Images to locate images of key locations in Tasmania. The aim of the game is to locate a unique image that no other group in the class has selected.

To play the game:

Ask students to form groups of 4 or 5. They should give their group a name to be written on the whiteboard for score keeping. Appoint a student to keep score.

Each group is to search for an image of a specific location in Tasmania. Only one person in each group is permitted to search on one hand-held device. Allocate 30 seconds for the task to be completed. Each group should nominate a representative to present their chosen image to the class. These representatives should form a circle with their devices in hand, displaying their selected image. Provide 5 minutes for the students to determine which group has a unique image that no other group found. That group receives one point. Ask the score keeper to mark the points on the whiteboard. If more than one representative finds an image that no other group has, they are also awarded a point.

Tally the points for each group and allocate a prize for the winning team - keep it simple!

Step 4.

Hold a class discussion about the ways in which waterways connect places and affect liveability of places. Include in the discussion the potentially negative environmental impacts of dirty energy operations across the different regions of Tasmania. Use the students’ familiarity with the images found in the ICT activity to highlight the value of clean energy operations. Consider the following points in your discussion (students can also respond to these questions on the Student Worksheet):

How much does the natural beauty of a place affect your choice of where you’d like to live?
How many of these seven places in Tasmania look like they would score highly on your personal ‘liveability’ scale?
Which place would you most like to live in and why?
Which images illustrate the way in which waterways connect places and affect the actual and perceived liveability of places?
What are the potentially negative environmental impacts of dirty energy operations across Tasmania?
What are some aesthetic and practical implications for ecosystems that use ‘green’ energy production methods?

Differentiated activities

Provisions for Learning Support: Teachers should consider learning support requirements of some students when organising the groups.

Extension activity: Students could try creating their own search engine racing game based on the activity provided here.

Homework

Students could look at a map of Tasmania and pinpoint the locations of each place featured in the seven rounds of the ICT game.
