Teaching Sequence

15 minutes	flipped activity: students watch the video and fill in Table 1.
15 minutes	hazards brainstorm
45 minutes	student safety poster

Work through this resource material in the following sequence:

Step 1.

A flipped lesson provides the opportunity for students to work independently in their own time to learn new content. Before class, digitally share the Student Worksheet link with your students. Instruct students to watch the video 'Lab Safety' (https://youtu.be/qqI1gafJA-4) and record all the safety rules in Table 1.

Step 2.

During class, ask students how many rules they identified in the video. Did everyone get the same amount?

Ask students to read one safety rule out and specify why it is important to follow. Teachers will gain insight from student responses which can be used to plan other lessons and activities.

Add any other safety rules specific to your science lab if they aren't in the students table.

Step 3.

Explain to students that a hazard is a possible source of danger. Complete a brainstorm on the board listing all the possible hazards that might be in your science lab. A few examples include:

Unlabelled chemicals
Flammable materials/chemicals near a flame
Cluttered bench space
Precariously placed glassware
Broken glassware
Hot plates left turned on etc.

Ask students to copy the brainstorm into their workbooks.

In pairs, students are to strategise possible ways to avoid these hazards and note them down in their brainstorm (using a different colour pen).

Discuss with students that if a hazard triggers an event in the class, they are to alert the teacher straight away.

Point out any other safety equipment in the lab such as fire extinguishers, eye washing locations, lab coats, emergency buttons etc.

Step 4.

Students are to create a lab safety poster. Divide up all the safety rules and assign one rule to each students. Students can present their poster either by drawing it or using an app like glogster.

There poster will be assessed using the following criteria:

Clarity of rule
Safety precautions required
Creativity of poster design

Hang up the posters in the science lab to be viewed as a gallery.

Use these reflection questions as a formative assessment:

When should you gather equipment and set up experiments?
What should you do if you break a glass beaker?
What should you be wearing when doing experiments?
What should you do before using a chemical?
When should you return chemicals to the bottle it came from?
When you are finished with glassware, what should you do before returning it?
Where should you place solid waste? Why?
After using chemicals, you should... because...
What should you do if you get a strong chemical on your skin or in your eye?
