Understanding Bias, Privilege, Racism and Allyship Through an AFL Lens

SecondaryYear 9 - 10EnglishText AnalysisReadingHumanities and Social SciencesCivics and CitizenshipAboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and CulturesSocialIndigenous EducationSocial ActionSocial and Emotional LearningSport

In this thought-provoking unit, students will explore important social issues such as bias, privilege, stereotypes, and racism within the context of the AFL and AFLW. Through collaboration with Collingwood Football Club, students will analyse real-world examples, including the club's Do Better report, to understand how language influences perceptions of individuals and groups in sport.

By critically engaging with these themes, students will develop the tools to challenge bias, recognise privilege, and use inclusive language to support a more equitable and respectful community. This unit will also help students explore their role in creating an inclusive society, particularly through the lens of allyship.

Tune In

Students will assess how language can affect perceptions and relationships. Through the lens of AFL/AFLW, they will explore their own beliefs and values.
