These resources are part of the Love Food? Love Bees! education resources created in collaboration with ACT for Bees.
This unit for Years 5 & 6, Valuing and Protecting Bees, spans multiple subjects and has been designed to:
- introduce students to the critical role bees play in pollinating our food, with the understanding that bees pollinate at least a third of everything we eat
- engage students in hands-on observation activities where they identify bee-friendly plants and monitor bee behaviour in their school environment
- connect students to nature through mindfulness practices that incorporate bee-related themes and metaphors
- develop research skills as students investigate native Australian bees and compare them to European honey bees
- explore the anatomy of flowers and bees to understand the remarkable adaptations that support their symbiotic relationship
- examine the various threats facing bee populations and use critical thinking to analyse the flow-on effects on ecosystems and food production
- empower students to become advocates for bees by planning and executing their own social action projects.
Through this comprehensive unit, students will develop a deep appreciation for the vital role bees play in our food systems and ecosystems, while building crucial skills in scientific observation, research, mathematical thinking and environmental advocacy.
