These lessons are part of the Lord Howe Island Education Resources.

This English, Science and Geography unit for Years 5 & 6, Exploring Lord Howe Island, has been designed to

  • introduce students to the geographical and ecological features of Lord Howe Island, helping them locate and describe key elements of the island using mapping conventions
  • develop students’ understanding of how human activities—such as climate change and plastic pollution—impact fragile island ecosystems and explore actions we can take to reduce harm
  • investigate the threats posed by invasive species, using the case study of Lord Howe Island’s rodent eradication program to understand environmental challenges and conservation solutions
  • explore animal adaptations through the lens of island biodiversity, focusing on species such as the Lord Howe Island stick insect and woodhen
  • encourage students to communicate their learning through creative tasks such as maps, models, posters, Padlets and dioramas that showcase ecological knowledge and problem-solving
  • foster critical thinking and collaboration as students create and reflect on their own island designs, applying their understanding of geography, ecology and adaptation.

This cross-curricular unit invites students to explore how the unique features of isolated ecosystems can help us understand evolution, conservation, and the importance of protecting our natural world.
