Preparation

If you have completed Lesson 1 in this Unit, you can skip this section and go to Step 1. Today, we’re going to look at a group of people who are working to break down barriers.

Step 1

Ask your students: “Is there a difference in the way sportsmen and sportswomen are portrayed in the media”?

Use the Sportswomen in the Media visual explainer to compare some images of how sports people are portrayed by the media.

Ask your students: “You may have heard the phrase, ‘you can’t be, what you can’t see’. Why is visual imagery and representation important”? What happens when we flip the phrase to be “You can be, what you can see?”.

Step 2

Using the Women’s World Cup logos slide deck (or by accessing 1000logos.net) look at how the Women’s World Cup logos have changed over time.

Ask students to look at the images and identify key elements that provide the context of the logo. Read the descriptive passages and ask students:

Why do they think those design choices were made?
What changes over time?

Step 1

As a class, read the article about the artists who were invited to design the 2023 Women’s World Cup logo and posters.

Literacy extension: We have included a cloze activity with this article to assist with reading comprehension.

Step 2

Using the worksheets, ask students to identify elements in the posters that reference either the World Cup or represent the host cities.

Step 3

Come back as a whole class and discuss:

Which elements represent the World Cup?
Which elements represent the host cities?
Did you find any common themes between the posters?
Why is the inclusion of First Nations’ elements and names significant?

Step 4

In the article, Chern’ee discussed how designing the posters made her feel:

I was overwhelmed really, I was very excited, very honoured. This is a huge event that's coming up. It's such an amazing feeling. And to see FIFA putting so much time and effort for the local Indigenous people and the different regions, taking us into consideration, you don't see that very often.

Step 1

Now it’s our turn! If we were going to host a Women’s Football Tournament here, what elements would we include in a poster?

Students design a poster for a Women’s Football Tournament if it was hosted in their town/city. The tournament could be the FIFA Women’s World Cup, The Olympics, The Women’s Asian Cup, or any other women’s football tournament. The poster could be hand drawn, painted, created on the computer, etc.

Have a discussion before they start, encouraging them to think about:

What elements of your local town stand out?
What design elements would you use?
Why?
What First Nations elements could you include?

You could decide to keep the theme of the 3 silhouettes from the 2023 World Cup poster series (and we’ve included a template to help you out) or create a totally different design.

Learning extension: Design a logo for your tournament. Include an artist’s statement discussing design choices.

Reflection

Ask students if they think there should be different logos and posters for men’s tournaments and women’s tournaments. For examples, should there be one set of posters and logos for the FIFA World Cup? Why/why not?

Literacy extension: Write a persuasive text or have a debate about the positives/negatives of having the same promotional materials for both women’s and men’s tournaments

Complete some maths activities such as:

creating a graph to compare pay levels between men and women
creating a graph to compare pay levels between different sports
working out differences
