Step 3.

Answer the following questions:

What did you discover? (e.g. Were there more open or closed-ended questions? Was there a particular kind of question you preferred?)

Step 4.

Find a partner and set up a timer for 60 seconds. Try to answer as many questions as you can in 60 seconds then swap over. Once you’re both finished answer the following questions:

How many questions did you each answer?

Did you find it easy or challenging to answer the questions? Which were the most difficult?

Were your answers honest? Why/why not?

What can you learn about someone in 60 seconds?

Part B: Real-world Connection

Step 1.

Read the following:

Asking great questions is an essential part of scientific research. In scientific research, questions are formulated to help the researcher collect data. The data is then used to make conclusions and predictions.

The main two types of data collected are:

More simply put:

Quantitative data can be easily turned into numbers, graphs and charts. The best way to collect quantitative data is to ask close-ended questions.
Qualitative data is better suited to turning into stories and case-studies. The best way to collect qualitative data is to ask open-ended questions.

Step 2.

Read the following:

A very popular researcher in mainstream culture at the moment is Dr Brené Brown from Texas, USA. The reason she is so popular is that she asks great open-ended questions and uses the qualitative data she collects to create interesting stories that everyone can relate to. She calls herself a researcher/storyteller.

Brené Brown has a background in social work and the topics she researches are all about people and how we feel. She’s learned a lot about how humans experience vulnerability, shame, courage and love.

This is great for AIME and IMAGI-NATION{TV} because one of their values is ‘No Shame’. Why do you think it’s important to learn more about shame and how we experience it?

Read the following:

When the leaders in the IMAGI-NATION{TV} 60 second challenge are asked to answer the questions on the IMAGI-NATION Questionnaire, they have a short time-frame in which to answer and they also have an important decision to make:

How vulnerable am I going to allow myself to be?

This is a common dilemma faced by leaders everywhere, and indeed most people, most days of their lives.

Brené Brown says that in order to be comfortable with making yourself feel vulnerable, you need to have trust. She also says that in order for you to have trust, there needs to be a set of specific conditions in place. She created an acronym - BRAVING - to summarise these conditions.

Part C: Reflect

Step 1.

It is your turn to answer the IMAGI-NATION Questionnaire. You are going to do this twice.

Choose five questions to answer. You will answer the same questions both times.
The first time you answer the questions, the answers are only for you. Perhaps you could rip them up or burn them once this lesson is finished. Think deeply about the questions and write truthfully.
The second time you answer the questions, write your answers as if you are doing an interview for a magazine. Your friends, family and teachers are all likely to read these answers.

Hint: If you’re not very comfortable writing your answers down, you could do a voice recording instead; just keep in mind that this will make it tricker to compare your two different versions later.

Use the IMAGI-NATION Questionnaire worksheet or copy the questions from Part A, Step 2 into an editable document.

Step 2.

Answer the following questions:

Was there much difference between your two responses to the questionnaire?

Which response was more truthful?

Did you feel differently when completing each of the questionnaires? How?

How vulnerable did you allow yourself to be for each different version (you could rate this out of ten)?

In which circumstances do you think it’s appropriate to share personal information?

When might it be best to keep personal information to yourself?

How could you politely let someone know when you don’t feel comfortable sharing your personal information (e.g. what might you say)?

Step 3.

Think back to the 60 second challenge you watched at the start of this lesson (or watch it again). Answer these questions:

How vulnerable do you think this leader allowed themselves to be?

What do you think might happen if one of the leaders decided to be 100% honest and vulnerable in their 60 second challenge? How might this make them feel? How might it make the audience feel?

Do you think that leadership requires you to be vulnerable or that leaders should try to avoid being vulnerable? Explain your answer.

The Proust Questionnaire is commonly used by writers to help them ‘get to know’ their imaginary characters.

Taking it Further

Option 1. Examine three questionnaires found on the internet (e.g. personality quizzes, career questionnaires). Answer these questions:

Do these questionnaires use open or closed questions?
What is the purpose of these questionnaires?
How might you improve them?
Do you think internet questionnaires are useful or helpful in any way? If so, which ones and how?

Option 2. Design your own questionnaire. It should have at least eight open-ended questions and two close-ended questions.

Follow these steps:

Complete the questionnaire yourself.
Make improvements to the questions, if needed.
Invite three friends to complete the questionnaire and provide feedback. They could answer these questions:
- Were the questions interesting to answer?
- Did you provide truthful answers to the questions?
- Did you feel safe sharing truthful answers to the questions?
- How could the questions be improved?
Make changes to the questions, if needed.
Publish your questions on social media using the hashtag #imaginationTV.

Option 3. Conduct a research project by completing the following steps:

Step 1.

Create your own questionnaire that you could use to conduct a qualitative scientific study on human behaviour/beliefs or feelings.

When designing your questionnaire you should consider:

What do I want to learn about human behaviour/beliefs or feelings?
How will I make the respondents feel safe to be vulnerable?
How will I protect the respondents from over-sharing?
How will I protect the identity of the respondents? Your research data should remain anonymised - no-one except you and the respondent should be able to tell who said what.
How can I frame the questions to get interesting answers?
Are the questions open-ended?

Step 2.

Type or write up your questionnaire. You will need to include the following information with your questionnaire:

Title of the questionnaire.
The researcher’s name (you) and organisation (your school/class).
The purpose of your questionnaire. Research ethics require that your respondents know what the purpose of the study is. Make sure you write a clear statement explaining what you want to find out and what you are going to do with the information. You could also include your hypothesis.
An explanation of how you are keeping the respondents’ information and responses confidential and anonymised.
Information for respondents of where and when they will be able to view the results of the study. It is best practice to allow your respondents to see the data and stories presented from the research. You should also give them an opportunity to provide corrections or feedback on any quotes or case-studies related specifically to themselves.
The number of responses you are hoping to get to make the data interesting and accurate.
Clear instructions for the respondents on how to answer the questions and what is expected of them.
At least ten open-ended questions.

Step 3.

Conduct your research. You should provide a digital or hard-copy of the questionnaire to all respondents. Set a time-frame for people to respond and consider inviting respondents to answer in writing or via an interview.

Hint: If you decide to conduct interviews, you should voice-record them and save them in a secure location behind a password. Delete the interviews once you have them written down, or no longer need them.

Step 4.

Read or listen to the responses. Take note of any patterns. A good way to do this is to identify some themes you notice and give each theme a different colour. When one of the respondents talks about the theme, highlight it in the relevant colour (this is easier if you have transcribed - written down - any recorded interviews).

Step 5.

Write a report on your findings. Your report should include:

Title
Table of contents (if required)
Introduction - what the report is about and reasons for conducting the research
Methodology - how you conducted the research
Results and discussion - what you learned from the data and what this could mean in a broader context
Conclusion - summary of findings (Hint: no new content should be included here.)
References/bibliography.
