Step 1. Discuss: What is news?

News is the reporting of information about a recent or current event. News is relevant, interesting and useful. News makes people aware of what is happening around them.

Step 2. Explain:

The 5Ws and 1HA news report provides information about the what, when, where, who, why and how of a newsworthy event. What happened? When did it happen? Where did it happen? Who was involved? Why did it happen? How did it happen? In this lesson, students will be writing a news report on carbon trading. But first, we need to find out what that is.

Take Action: Write an article

Students act as journalists, writing a newspaper article under the headline 'Carbon Trading - good for the environment and the hip pocket'. They should create a newspaper article to match the headline. They will be required to collect evidence from reliable resources. The newspaper article should explain in detail how carbon credits can be traded for money.

Criteria:

Define: carbon credit, carbon trading, carbon budget.
Find out what measurements are used to calculate carbon credits.
Explain how Indigenous land managers can use cool burning to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and make money.
Explore the criteria a land manager in the northern savanna must meet to be able to apply for carbon credits using the savanna cool burning methodology.
