Exploring A World Of Colour - Activity Instructions

Have you ever imagined what the world might be like without colour? It’s lucky you don’t have to! We’re surrounded by colour everywhere. Your challenge is to spend some time finding colours in the world around you, then using those colours to make a picture.

Part A: Spotting Colours

Step 1.

Go outside and stand or sit in one spot without moving (you can move your head and turn around but you should try to stay on the one spot). Consider spending one or two minutes just listening to the sounds outside and observing any nature, including the wind and sunshine.

You can then use the following prompts to guide your colour observations:

How many colours can you see?
Where are these colours and what do they belong to?
Which are your favourite colours?
Do you know the names of all the colours you are looking at?
Do you know the names of all the things that the colours belong to?

Keep an eye out for:

Objects from nature, such as birds and insects, trees, flowers, the sky, the grass, any seeds or berries, rocks and pebbles.
Human-made objects, such as buildings, fences, power poles and lines, vehicles, and play equipment and toys.

While you’re doing this, take some time to think or talk about each object you spot. Is this an object from nature or has it been made by people? How can you tell? Things made by people often have straight lines and neat edges, while things made by nature often have rough edges and grow in wonky and uneven ways. You’ll probably notice some things that have a combination of natural and human-made objects, such as wooden fences or brick paths.

Record your observations by writing what you see on your Colour Observation Worksheet.

Step 2.

Create an artwork of the area of the yard that you visited that captures some of the colours that you saw. Use your worksheet to remind you what colours you saw and where you saw them.

Reflection

Read through the following questions and chat about your answers with the people doing this activity with you:

What did you like best about being outside?
Which were your favourite colours?
What other interesting things did you see while you were observing the colours of nature?

Taking It Further

Repeat this activity in different seasons, with different weather, at different times of the day or in different parts of your yard to see how your observations change.
